Tips and Best Practices for Event Security
As with any project or event, the best and first thing you should do is PLAN! Plan for what you do know, plan for what you think you know and plan for the unknown. The more you put into it, the safer the guests, crowd and venue will be.
To help you plan your security strategy:
• Know the venue inside and out- understand how ‘porous’ the venue is, referring to ways that people could gain access without using a typical entry point.
• Gauge attendee risk- are any of the guest speakers/performers a higher risk, with a controversial history. Also, look into suspicious activity such as bulk ticket buying.
• Control the crowd- keep guests away from crowding exit points, keep guests away from restricted areas and ensure entry is kept organised.
• Assess potential for large-scale attacks- bags should be checked upon entry and any weak points where someone could affect large amounts of people easily, should be monitored and controlled.
• Keep communication tight- constant comms are necessary and if using a professional security detail, ensure they have communications with the rest of the staff.
