1. Invest in Quality: it can be tempting to go for the cheaper, unbranded camera or system, but that would be a mistake and actually cost you more if it doesn’t work out and you have to replace it. It is much better to invest in a reputable security company or brand. If your budget is tight, start with a small, good quality, entry level system that has the capacity to add more cameras later on.

2. Check Warranties: a reputable security company will most likely sell CCTV systems with a warranty of up to three year and installation options. Unbranded cameras may only come with a six month product guarantee, which may even prove difficult to access, if the equipment were to fail, within that time.

3. Research Basic Camera Capabilities: consider what lens size, wide angle degree and memory storage you will require. Wide angle will capture a larger area but be less focused. For every millimetre of lens size, that is basically how far away, in metres, the camera can view. There are also three types of camera on the market: entry level analogue, High Definition (HD) and the high-end Internet protocol (IP).
