Minimizing the risk of burglary
Investing in the latest home security systems and technology is one way to reduce your chances of being burgled, but it’s usually the small things that can save you. If a burglar believes you’re in the house, they’re unlikely to want to burgle your property, so what can you do to make it appear like your home when you’re actually not? Well, having a car on the driveway is a good start, so if you’re fortunate enough to have two cars, having one parked outside the hose could lead the burglar to believe you’re in.
You could also leave lights on in the evening. It’s an old but effective trick and nothing says you’re not home like a dark house without any lighting or life inside. Another option is to leave the television on, whilst you can also create cardboard cutouts of people using cardboard boxes. Place these on the sofa or near the window and a burglar may think twice about breaking in to your property. Another handy option is to put up ‘beware of the dog’ signs, even if you don’t have one. The burglar may know you’re not inside but should they believe there’s a dog in the house, they may look at other properties in your area instead.
In addition to these handy tips, you also need to think about how you can hide your valuables should a burglar avoid those signs and break into your home. Hiding those valuables is extremely important, so you need to think of places burglars would never look. The attic is always a good space if yu don’t leave a ladder right beside it. Not many burglars are willing to head up in your attic so if you’re going away on holiday, consider placing the ultra expensive items up there.
